Well I finally had a chance to see M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Split and I have to talk about it, specifically that ending!
*WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD*
Split is directed by M.Night Shyamalan and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, James McAvoy, and Betty Buckley
Split focuses on the character of Kevin Wendell Crumb who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder. One of Kevin’s personalities, Dennis kidnaps three teenage girls and tells them they are a sacred offering to The Beast, Kevin’s 24th personality, who has superhuman abilities. I don’t want to bore you with the entire plot, so let’s skip to the good part!
Okay so major spoiler warning here! Turn back if you don’t want to know anything? I mean it! Still here? Okay *pause for dramatic effect* Split takes place in the same universe as Unbreakable! You might be asking yourself “Screen Sage, what is this Unbreakable of which you speak?” Well my friend, Unbreakable was a 2000 film (also directed by M. Night Shyamalan that tells the story of security guard David Dunn (Bruce Willis) and how he discovers with the help of his son that he is virtually indestructable. It seems David is one of the rare super humans, who are the next stage in evolution.
So how does Split tie into Unbreakable and vice versa? Well at the very end of the movie, after the main character Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) is rescued by police (after having been kidnapped by Kevin (James McAvoy) and the whole event is on the news and is being shown on a TV in a diner, where the press are calling this new threat “The Horde” (due to the person’s multiple personalities). Along the bar, a woman mentions how this reminds her of that man that was arrested 15 years ago “a man in a wheelchair” and they called him something and BRUCE WILLIS appears from the end of the bar to say “they called him Mister Glass.” David Dunn from Unbreakable is aware of this new threat and it seems he is the only one capable of stopping it. MIND BLOWN! M.Night Shyamalan is back!
All the praise to James McAvoy, who really gave it his all in this performance, he knocked this role out of the park! Every personality seems completely different from the other and he is truly terrifying in this film.
Anya Taylor-Joy was also great in the film, and is an actress that people should be on the look out for.
The big questions I am asking are:
Is David still saving people?
Is he retired from his life of fighting crime in his security guard poncho?
What has his life been like since he helped catch Elijah (Mister Glass)?
Needless to say I am very much looking forward to the third film is this series!
What I liked:
Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) and his 23 other personalities. They were all very interesting people.
The backstory on Kevin being abused by his mother, it really added depth to his character and it made more sense why he had developed all these different personalities.
Casey and her backstory, it also added depth to her character. Anya Taylor-Joy did a very good job with the character.
The reveal of Kevin being one of the super humans from the Unbreakable universe!
The reveal of this film taking place in the same universe as Unbreakable!
The reveal of David Dunn in the diner at the end of the film!
What I disliked:
The psychologist going to Kevin’s house, it was a pretty stupid move.
What say you? Did you see Split? Did you like it? Whatever your thoughts let me know!
