There are many things that make a TV show enjoyable, great writing, great acting, and a great setting, but there is one important thing that makes a show especially enjoyable which is its characters. One type of character is the villain, and they can make or break a TV show. Villains are a special group because they serve as a foil to the main protagonist, and the main obstacle for the main character. There are many great TV villains but I compiled a list of my own. Here is Part I of My Top 10 TV villains!
*WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
10. Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) (CW’s Arrow, Season 4)
Damien Darhk is a mysterious man, who according to Ra’s Al Ghul used to be a member of The League of Assassins but was very dangerous. Based on episodes of Arrow, Damien is a smooth and very cunning. He is affiliated with the criminal organization known as H.I.V.E. and wants to control Star City. He is shown to be a family man, and to portray himself as an honest man who wants only what is best for Star City. Based on encounters with Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Damien is shown to be a formidable opponent and is able to tap into some ancient magic to attain Jedi-like powers. He is confident, bold, and fearless which makes him a dangerous foe. His training with The League of Assassins makes him a very deadly foe and his unlimited resources through H.I.V.E. make him an even dangerous man. Damien Dahrk is a dangerous villain with unlimited resources making him one of the best TV villains!
9. Wilson Fisk/King Pin (Vincent D’Onfrio) (Netflix’s Daredevil)
Wilson Fisk is a very complicated character, on the surface he is just a businessman trying to make Hell’s Kitchen a better place, but in reality he is crime boss who is controlling Hell’s Kitchen through fear. He has tons of money and unlimited resources making him quite the dangerous adversary. He is ruthless and is not afraid to get his hands dirty and is willing to go to any lengths to prevent people from revealing the truth about his business dealings. He had a tough childhood, living with an alcoholic father who abused his mother, which led to him murdering his father. He enjoys the finer things in life, including fine dining, wines and enjoys talking about art. Wilson Fisk’s ruthless nature and unlimited resources make him a great TV villain!
8. Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) (CW’s Arrow)
Malcolm Merlyn is much like the other villains I have mentioned, however he has some unique abilities. Merlyn just like Damien Darhk was trained by The League of Assassins, but is very adept in handling a bow and arrow. He has unlimited resources due to his wealth and power, and he is a very dangerous enemy due to his training under The League of Assassins. Malcolm is a skilled fighter, and despite doing some questionable things, he does have a soft and caring side because he cares for his daughter. He is willing to go to any lengths to ensure his daughter’s protection and safety, even though sometimes it seems like he is more concerned with maintaining his power and influence over Star City. Malcolm has been shown to make a very helpful ally to Green Arrow and his team, but due to his nature he is very hard to trust and continues to be an adversary to Oliver Queen and his friends. Malcolm’s training and skill with a bow and unlimited resources make him a great TV villain!
7) Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard) (Supernatural)
Crowley is a unique villain because for one thing he is a demon and The King of Hell. He is a constant problem for Castiel (an Angel who is an ally of Sam and Dean Winchester) and often finds himself at odds with Sam and Dean Winchester (hunters, and the main protagonists). He is an opportunist and was able to take control of Hell while there was a vacancy and tries to stomp out any possible mutinies or dissension among the ranks. Most of Crowley’s underlings fear him, because he is ruthless and will kill anyone (especially his own soldiers) at a moments notice. He is smooth, calculating, and conniving and is always a few steps ahead of his enemies making him a very dangerous foe. He has a great sense of humor and enjoys making life miserable for The Winchester boys, but at times has joined forces with them which caused him to become almost best friends with Dean. Crowley is still evil deep down and because of rising up the ranks in Hell and now being The King of Hell has made him extremely powerful and a formidable foe for The Winchesters and Angels and other demons who oppose his reign as King. Crowley is not someone who can be trusted and always has an ulterior motive and has the ability to brutally torture his enemies making him a great TV villain!
6. Gustavo (Gus) Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) (AMC’s Breaking Bad)
Gus Fring is a very interesting villain because on the surface he is just an honest businessman who owns a fast food chain called Pollos Hermanos, but in actuality it is a front to cover up the fact that he is a drug kingpin manufacturing and selling large quantities of crystal meth. He does a very good job at keeping his illegal operation under wraps and even creates this persona of being a friendly neighborhood guy, who donates to charities and attends town meetings and is very friendly with public. This is one of the things that makes him dangerous because nobody would suspect that a guy donating to charities and being involved in community activities would secretly be running a meth cooking operation. Gus is an unforgiving and ruthless man who does not tolerate failure, leading him to slit the throat of one of his men in front of Jesse Pinkman and Walter White. Gus Fring is willing to go to any lengths to ensure his illegal operation stays secret and goes as far to threaten Walt and Jesse after Jesse murders a chemist who was in line to replace Walter. Gustavo Fring is an unforgiving and ruthless man and has no problem getting his hands dirty and his persona as a nice and friendly man make him a great TV villain!
