Why The Twelfth Doctor Should Become The Valeyard

Standard

Well folks that’s it Series 9 has come and gone and now we just have The Christmas Special to look forward to. I will be honest I was very disappointed with the Series 9 finale but I believe that Peter Capaldi is a fantastic Doctor. Capaldi is the most talented actor Doctor Who has had in years and I feel that he should not go to waste. I believe The Twelfth Doctor should become The Valeyard and here is why…

                     *WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD*

For those unfamiliar, The Valeyard is a character that appeared during Colin Baker’s tenure as The Sixth Doctor. The Master described The Valeyard as “an amalgamation of the darker sides of The Doctor’s nature.” Not much is known about The Valeyard and his origins and in the audio story Trial of The Valeyard, The Valeyard returned again and teased The Sixth Doctor about his origins. According to The Valeyard when The Doctor was on his final life (12th regeneration making him The 13th Doctor) he performed experiments to try and prolong his life, trying to tap into Time Lord DNA that could somehow create another regeneration. It is never fully explained whether The Valeyard was lying or telling the truth, but none the less it is intriguing.

If you have been watching Doctor Who since Peter Capaldi became The Twelfth Doctor, you would notice that he is very dark at times, and quite recently in his second season he really crossed the line and even did some things that made me question whether or not he could call himself The Doctor anymore.

In his first season, Twelve kept asking “Am I a Good Man?” and it came up again this season and I really hope this is part of his Doctor’s story arc, like Eleven had The Silence and The Question and Ten had The Four Knocks.

Peter Capaldi is a very talented actor and in my opinion was a real steal for The BBC and all those involved in the making of Doctor Who. Despite the ratings dip and people worried that the BBC wants to get rid of Capaldi, I don’t see that happening.

A talent like Capaldi should not go to waste, and that’s why I believe he deserves some great writing and a chance to really show what he is capable of (see “Heaven Sent”), which leads me to my first reason why Twelve should become The Valeyard…

PETER CAPALDI IS A FANTASTIC ACTOR AND COULD PULL IT OFF

Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor becoming The Valeyard would be a great character arc for his Doctor and also would give the writers some great writing material (if done right).

Peter Capaldi has shown that he is more than capable of turning in amazing performances and showing his range as an actor. Just watch his speech from “The Zygon Inversion” and his whole performance in “Heaven Sent,” he continues to impress audiences and critics with his acting. Peter Capaldi brings a gravitas to The Doctor that has been missing since Eccleston and maybe even before that. I mean look at the image I chose for this article. How many actors can convey the kind of gravitas and anger just from their eyes and eyebrows alone?

Peter Capaldi in my opinion could pull off The Valeyard and I believe if it is done right, it could go down as one of The Classic Doctor Who stories. The Valeyard is such an interesting character and I think it should be explored more.

IT WOULD BE INTERESTING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND MAKE FOR AN INTERESTING STORY ARC FOR CAPALDI’S DOCTOR

Imagine this, The Twelfth Doctor becomes consumed with so much rage and anger that he becomes something else entirely. This would happen gradually of course. He could kill someone or refuse to save them (akin to Solomon The Trader in “Dinosaurs on A Space Ship”) He starts to do even more questionable things and eventually has to redeem himself and he does this by saving Gallifrey (explaining his appearance in The Day of The Doctor ) and then BOOM he regenerates! His whole character arc would be about redemption, and reminding himself to be a good man, leading him to save Gallifrey or die trying.

IT WOULD GIVE THE WRITERS SO MUCH JUICY MATERIAL

If Peter Capaldi’s Doctor became The Valeyard, it would give the writers a chance to really toy with the idea. Who is The Valeyard? Where did he come from? Was his creation inevitable. Is he The Doctor or something else entirely? All of these questions are just the tip of the iceberg for the writers on the show and a great starting point for them. It’s amazing enough to write for Peter Capaldi, but to toy with the idea of making his Doctor become something else would be really exciting!

It would be the perfect sendoff for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor and the next Doctor would sort of be like The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccelston), except he would be living with the guilt of all the things he did as The Valeyard!

IT WOULD BE A GREAT SET UP FOR THE NEXT DOCTOR/ACTOR

If The Twelfth Doctor becomes The Valeyard, commits terrible acts and has to redeem himself, it would be a great lead in for the next actor who becomes The Doctor!

The Twelfth Doctor becomes The Valeyard, commits some horrible acts and has to redeem himself, which would then carry onto the next Doctor who would make his mission to be a good man and earn the title of The Doctor again. This would be like if we saw John Hurt’s War Doctor and his involvement in The Time War and watched him regenerate into Christopher Eccelston’s Ninth Doctor and saw his development into The Doctor, the hero and the man who saves people!

As of now I have no idea what The Twelfth Doctor’s story arc is, does it have anything to do with The Hybrid? Is it the whole “Am I A Good Man?” Or is it something that has yet to be revealed?

Doctor Who? Who is The Doctor? I AM THE VALEYARD!

THE SHOWS TITLE WOULD STAY THE SAME, BUT ITS TITLE WOULD HAVE A DIFFERENT MEANING

Having The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) become The Valeyard leaves the show open to so many possibilities and the best part is that the shows title stays the same, it would still be Doctor Who, except this time the title’s meaning would change. Instead of Doctor Who as in the mystery of who The Doctor is, it would refer to The Doctor not calling himself The Doctor anymore and The Valeyard asking Doctor Who as in I am no longer The Doctor.

I believe The Twelfth Doctor is slowly skirting the line of becoming The Valeyard and will get more dark as time goes by. The thing about turning Twelve into The Valeyard is that it doesn’t have to last a whole season, it could be a half season story arc! Either way, I really hope it happens!

What say you? Do you think Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor should become The Valeyard? If so, why? If not, why not? Whatever your thoughts let me know!
