True Detective Season 1 Review (10/10)

I just had a chance to catch up on the critically acclaimed HBO series True Detective, and I wanted to give my thoughts on it. First of all, wow, this is how you write a great TV show!

Okay quick summary, True Detective tells the story of two Detectives, Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) in Louisiana in 1995 who are trying to find a serial killer responsible for killing a former prostitute (Dora Kelly Lange) in a ritualistic manner. She is found naked appearing as if she is praying in front of a tree with a symbol painted on her back and with deer antlers on her head made to look like a crown.

In 2012, Martin and Cohle are interviewed about the Dora Lange case by two other Detectives, Thomas Papania and Maynard Gilbough. Another girl was discovered and killed in the same ritualistic manner as Dora Lange in 1995, leading Detectives Papania and Gilbough to believe that Martin and Cohle never caught the real killer. Through the interviews we are shown events that happened back in 1995 during the Dora Lange case, and the story-telling switches between 1995 and 2012. In both 1995 and 2012 we get some insight into Martin and Cohle. Cohle is a new transfer to the CID and gets on Martin’s and other Detectives’ nerves in the department. Rustin Cohle seems to be a nihilist and has a very cynical view of life and humanity. He always has something profound to say about the meaning of life, and usually ends up pissing off Martin in the process haha. In 2012, Cohle is a different person, he looks ragged, older and frankly like he has seen better days, but he still has his nihilistic views. I don’t want to give away anymore details but, suffice to say both Martin and Cohle are very interesting characters.

Having just finished True Detective, I can safely say that it is by far one of the best TV shows I have ever seen. The story is both intriguing and engaging, leaving you wanting more at the end of each episode. Seriously, I dare you, try and just watch one episode and stop, it is very hard! There are only eight episodes so it’s very easy to finish this show quickly, in a few days or a week, depending on your schedule of course. The two main characters Martin Hart and Rustin Cohle are very interesting, and fleshed out and  both Harrelson and McConaughey are superb and make the show that much better. The writing and pacing of the show is just so good, and it feels perfect when you are watching it. To anyone doubting Matthew McConaughey’s acting ability, watch True Detective, he will blow you away with his performance. True Detective Season One was fantastic, with a great cast, great writing, and a great story and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something worthwhile to watch. Apparently season 2 is going to be based in California, with Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell in the leading roles, so that should be interesting.

What say you? Have you seen True Detective? If so, did you like it? Do you like Matthew McConaughey? Whatever your thoughts let me know!
