Castle Season 7 Episode 1 Review

Well it’s finally here, the return of one of my favorite shows Castle! Last season we were left wondering what happened to Richard Castle, when he was on his way to his wedding to Beckett. Castle was driving his car to The Hamptons, when a black SUV tried to run him off the road. Beckett, Ryan, and Esposito found Castle’s car off the side of the road in a ditch and apparently on fire.

The episode opens with Beckett, Ryan and Esposito investigating what happened to Castle, when they track the GPS in Castle’s phone taking them to a junk yard where a man is using a trash compactor to destroy the black SUV. Through Beckett’s investigation it appears Castle was abducted, then more evidence including camera footage of Castle leaving a bag with $10,000 in cash in a dumpster, a tent with his belongings, including his watch and wedding tux found near a dock in Gloucester, MA, and a witness (Henry Jenkins) seeing Castle supposedly camping in his tent lead Beckett to believe Castle was behind his own abduction.

Eventually after two months of Castle being missing, he is found unconscious in a boat by The Coast Guard. Beckett is upset at the idea that Richard would purposely miss their wedding, and starts to lose trust in him (Really Beckett? Remember when Castle was accused of murder and you found out XXX K was framing him?!). When Richard finally wakes up in the hospital, he is shocked to discover from Beckett that he has been missing for two months. Castle says the only thing he remembers is being followed by a black SUV and waking up in the hospital. He cannot account for the months in between that.

When Beckett starts to doubt Castle, she takes him to the spot where his tent was found in Gloucester, MA, but Castle claims someone is staging it to look like he was living there. Beckett tells Castle there was a witness, and they both go to the mobile home where Beckett, Ryan and Esposito met a man named Henry Jenkins. Another man answers his door claiming to be the real Henry Jenkins and says he hasn’t been to his mobile home in months…interesting.

Beckett, Ryan, Esposito, and Castle discover someone hacked the DMV and there was a screw up with the id pictures, making Beckett, Ryan and Esposito think that the man they paid a visit to in Gloucester earlier in the investigation was the real Henry Jenkins. Beckett, Ryan, and Esposito show Castle a picture from the footage of him leaving $10,000 in a dumpster, but Castle says he cannot explain that. This then leaves Castle and Beckett intrigued, begging the question, who was that man claiming to be Henry Jenkins and who staged it to make it look like Castle was just living in a tent in Gloucester for two months and why? I don’t know why, but I have a strong feeling Castle’s father (James Brolin), who was revealed in season 5 to be a CIA Operative, had something to do with this.

I really enjoyed this episode, and was wondering what the story arc was going to be this season. I am very intrigued to find out who or what has done this to Castle, and why? What is their end game? Is it an old enemy? No matter what the answer is, I know I am looking forward to the new season of Castle, and cannot wait to see the dynamic duo of Detective Kate Beckett and Mystery Novelist Richard Castle try to solve this mystery! I loved the start to this season and that’s why I am giving this episode a 10/10!
